Treading Water for Mental Health Advocacy!

🌊 TREADING WATER

Swim 21 Miles So No One Has To Struggle Alone

When you are living with poor mental health, it can feel like you are not moving forward. You are not drowning, but you are not getting anywhere either. You are simply trying to keep your head above water.

Across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, people contact Lamp because they feel stuck in systems, overwhelmed by waiting lists, unsure of their rights or exhausted from repeating their story. Many describe it as treading water.

This May, we are swimming 21 miles, the distance of the English Channel, to raise funds for community mental health advocacy.

That is 1,352 lengths of a standard 25 metre pool.

Every length logged represents someone who is trying to stay afloat.

Why We Are Doing This

Lamp provides independent community mental health advocacy. We listen, we explain rights, we challenge unfair decisions and we help people navigate complex services so they can move forward with confidence.

Advocacy does not rescue people. It stands beside them until they are strong enough to swim again.

With increasing demand and ongoing funding pressures, your support helps ensure that no one is left to tread water alone.

£18 can fund a first contact conversation with someone who does not know where else to turn.
£420 can fund a full advocacy journey, supporting someone from crisis to clarity.

How It Works

You can take part as an individual, family or team.

Swim any distance, at any pool

Log your lengths throughout May

Help us collectively reach 21 miles

Raise funds to support Lamp’s work

Whether you swim 10 lengths or 200, you are part of the collective effort.

Together, we will cross the Channel.

Choose Your Challenge

Treading Water is about collective impact, but you can choose the level that feels right for you.

You might simply want to contribute a few lengths each week and help us reach the shared 21-mile community target. Every length counts and every swimmer plays a part in moving us forward together.

You could take part as a team, bringing colleagues, friends or family together to contribute towards the collective distance. Teams can set their own goals, track progress and raise funds as a group while helping Lamp cross the Channel.

If you are looking for a personal stretch challenge, you can commit to swimming the full 21 miles yourself across May. That is 1,352 lengths of a 25-metre pool, the equivalent of swimming the English Channel.

And for experienced swimmers who want to go even further, there is the 42-mile challenge, the distance to France and back. That is 2,704 lengths and a serious test of endurance, resilience and determination.

Whether you swim a handful of lengths or the full distance twice, you are helping ensure that no one in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland has to tread water alone.
